Raby Ride 10 August 2008

It was really good to be able run the Raby Ride again this year, after the awful disappointment in 2007, when the uncertainty generated by the Pirbright foot and mouth outbreak forced us to cancel on the Saturday morning.

Weatherwise the ride day was very mixed – lovely sunshine at the start and some terrible downpours later on. Many riders setting out in short sleeves must have got drenched – but the sun came out again and so did the smiles. As always people appreciated the opportunity this ride gives for a good long canter through the grassy fields of three of Raby Estate’s tenant farms: East House, West High Wood and Craig Top – we are very grateful to the Dixon, Wilson and Ward families who do so much by way of moving stock and opening gates  to enable the ride to go almost unchecked through all this grazing land.

This was the first time we had St John’s Ambulance at Raby – and when the message came that a rider had come off her horse and was in some pain, it was good to be able to send the ambulance up the road to collect her, and check that she was not seriously injured. Hopefully, Irene, you are now fully mended.

In among the general good atmosphere there was one episode that seriously bothers me. Two riders, both new to the sport, one of them doing her very first pleasure ride, had a really bad experience of bad behaviour from other riders. They got jostled by two or three riders wanting to pass them on the forest track just before the first checkpoint – one of their horses got upset and backed into some barbed wire and received cuts and scratches – but worse was that the other riders did not show any concern, let alone stop and see that they were OK. I don’t know if these two potential members will ever come back to us again.

All told it was a good day though – not least thanks to all the friends who helped: Nick and Melanie Brown on one checkpoint, Chris and Bernard Haston with Shona and Alistair on the other; Alison Wanless, Sylvia Briggs, Trevor Clark with family, and Clare Hibberd all on gate opening duty, as was Norma Kendrick who also kept me sane in the Secretary Caravan. Last but not least Les Spark who did timekeeper and an awful lot of the marking and demarking – tramping through all those canter fields!
