MARVELOUS MARSKE 2010
A big thank you to Ian Savage & all his helpers for a lovely ride. The weather forecast looked a bit iffy so we got to the venue ready for a prompt start & for once were away just after 9.30am. There only a few riders ahead of us & after overtaking one group we settled down for a lovely long canter. There was a 32km rider ahead of us & I was really pleased our ponies were happy to keep an even pace & were not racing to catch up/overtake. We did the 20km ride so after CP1 we were on our own & the ponies were really enjoying themselves, even trotting along the tracks in the woods, in previous years after slogging up the Eston Hills we are usually walking this section! There were no horses on the permissive bridleways above Upleathem so we could let them canter as much as they wanted, the only problem was the track curves clockwise & Douglas can only canter left fore leading so the corners felt like I was riding the wall of death!!!! He was enjoying it so much he even cantered down the hill to CP2, Darna was far more sensible & trotted this section!
When we got back to the venue it was deserted & both ponies slammed the brakes on as we asked them to go past their trailer to get to the time keeper, I think they missed the usual hustle & bustle of other horses & found all the machinery & rustling noises created by the strong breeze just too much! Ed had to get off & lead Darna through the yard,& hopped back on for the final few yards, Douglas following her to the timekeeper.
Many thanks to Ian, his helpers & the yard owner for allowing the ride to happen. Our ponies love it & hope it continues for many years to come.
