Hessewell Training Ride
7th June 2009
20 & 29kmOnce again Hessewell took place again this year on 7th June 2009 and despite the weather it turned out to be a good day – just a bit on the chilly side!
Before the ride mum and I set out to go and mark the route and the heavens opened. It was pouring with rain and the spray chalk would not stick to the ground. One of the problems with Hessewell is that it is very hard to mark due to the restricted access to vehicles around the route. However after getting soaked through, we eventually got the route marked with an additional 20km loop due to a high number of riders wanting the option of a shorter distance.
On the day we arrived at the venue to be greeted by a herd of cows which had yet to be moved to their new field for the day. With the help of Alison Wanless we managed to chase the cows into the adjoining field which consisted of fifteen minutes of me running across the field dodging “cow parcels” as I went! Shortly after this riders started to arrive and the first rider was out at 9:30am. Apart from a few riders having problems getting their horses over styles and one rider retiring, the ride went really well and lots of people enjoyed themselves.
When people arrived back to the venue, lots of riders commented on how lovely the new added loop at Sherburn quarry was and provided stunning views over Durham city and surrounding countryside – a gem mum and I discovered during our own training at home.
After the riders had finished there was a free BBQ at the venue – burgers, sausages, homemade cakes and drinks which were kindly provided by Dave Evans Photography.
Overall all the riders seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves with the whole day being a success. Also a big THANK YOU to all those who helped on the day their help really was appreciated and valuable to the ride’s success.Thank you
